What I really don't understand is why you keep planting your flower gardens that never seem to last more than ten minutes. Delicate care for each petal is obvious in your small and loving hands that work relentlessly to give each and every stem room to grow. Never have I seen such a passion for something so insignificant that will be gone so swiftly.

Last Thursday I watched you plant daffodils in the well-churned earth contained within makeshift wooden borders. It must have been three whole hours that had slipped away by the time you put those green gardening gloves on, and then no more than thirty seconds for the neighborhood dog to playfully thrash the fragile and vulnerable plants.

I see it often. Far too often. You slave away in your front yard spending all the precious minutes you have, and it is destroyed by wind, hail, animals... It makes me wonder if you know of this pattern. And if you do, why do you keep on building everything up again? Why don't you just give up? Don't you see that the world is against you? Does your persistence truly pay off like you say it will?

        ...

Years have passed now, and here I am sitting by your garden. It is in beautiful bloom-- gorgeous hues of violet and blue. The green stems are rooted and strong. They could never be torn away by anything; no wind, no hail, no animals... I look at them and think of your persistence. It truly did pay off after all this time, and has taught me to persist myself. I thank you for the wonderful lesson that you have taught me.

                                                                                                   Rest in peace.
I wrote this at writing camp in a workshop done by Chris Fisher, who is an awesome writer and a fantastic person to be around! ^.^
